Intro

Fungi…Feeling insecure about moving on studying their pathogenicity or associated diseases?

Check here the essential points about their structure (the focus will be on the differences between yeasts and moulds), replication and metabolism. We will also look at their scientific nomenclature.

A common ancestor, through an evolutionary process of more than 3 billion years, gave rise to organisms that today we group into three domains:

• Archaea,
• Bacteria,
• Eukarya (includes animals, fungi, plants and protozoa).

Fungi are grouped in their own kingdom – Kingdom Fungi.

Archaea and Bacteria are prokaryotes.
